Please Help! I have a terrible smell coming from all of my heat vents and cold air returns.?
This problem started about a month ago. The smell is kind of combination of smoke/rotting/general unexplainable funk. I live in apartment-style condo with 3 other units. The girl downstairs also can smell it, the two on the opposite side of the building cannot. It also stinks in the communal basement, near the heat vents. The smell varies throughout the day...sometimes unbearable, other times only somewhat noticable.
I have had my furnace checked...twice, no problems with it. I've changed the filter. I've taken apart many of the ducts in the basement looking for a dead animal with no success. I called a duct cleaning company...they said if there were an animal, cleaning it probably wouldn't get it out.
One thing I have noticed is that all of my heat vents have fiberglass insulation stuffed around the sides. I've removed much of it and noticed some black discoloration on some of it. Would this cause a smell?
Any other ideas...I would really appreciate it.
You need to have the apartment owners have a HVAC person out to check the vents or possibly clean the vents. There could be a dead rodent or only mold in the venting system, but either way it needs to be checked out.
